Freddie Jackson, R&B Legend Behind ‘You Are My Lady,’ Dies at 70

R&B legend Freddie Jackson has died at 70. His family announced the news Tuesday on his Instagram, writing that he went home to rest Monday night, three days after his 70th birthday. No cause of death was given.

The Harlem-born crooner became one of the defining voices of quiet storm R&B in the 1980s. His 1985 debut album Rock Me Tonight spent six weeks at No. 1 on the R&B chart and went platinum. “You Are My Lady” topped the R&B chart and became his signature record. Just Like the First Time followed in 1986 with another run of No. 1 R&B hits: “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” and “Jam Tonight.”

Jackson revealed in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with kidney disease, and partnered with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness.

His family said details about arrangements and ways to honor his legacy will be shared in the coming days.
