Chance the Rapper is ready to shorten his name, but not the way anybody expected. During an appearance on Raven-Symoné and Miranda Maday’s Tea Time podcast, the Chicago rapper said people have been telling him for years to drop “The Rapper” and just go by Chance. He wants to do the exact opposite.
“I’m gonna take off the ‘Chance,'” he said. “I just wanna be The Rapper. It’s been something that I’ve been thinking about a lot. I just really love the art form. I really love words.”
He explained that the “Chance” part of his name has always stood for the personal, vulnerable records about his family, his faith, and his relationships. These days he is more drawn to the craft itself. “I don’t love that as much now as I love just working within the genre and attacking things that aren’t necessarily so close to me sometimes,” he said. “I wanna carry rap the same way that rap has carried me through life.”
The timing fits a comeback run. Chance is finishing out his Coloring Book 10 year anniversary tour, which wraps October 11 in Pittsburgh, and his last album Star Line arrived in August 2025 after a six year drought following The Big Day. No word on when the new name takes effect, but festival posters are about to look very funny.
