Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday morning. There is just one problem. Ukraine says nobody told them.
In a Truth Social post Sunday, Trump wrote that there is now an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the war between Russia and Ukraine, effective immediately. “Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!”
Volodymyr Zelenskyy found out like everybody else. Asked about it, he told Axios the announcement was “news to me.” Then he added the line of the day: “If President Trump negotiated it with Putin, please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready, and we will accept it.”
“Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side.”

Meanwhile the war did not pause. Zelenskyy said Russian forces kept striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure all day, including a hit on a joint heat and power plant in Kharkiv. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital’s water and power grid stayed under attack. Russia has launched more than 200 strikes on Ukraine’s generating capacity in the past week, according to Zelenskyy.
The backstory is a whole week of shots fired. On Friday, Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel, a move Zelenskyy called “weak.” On Saturday, Trump said Zelenskyy should “damn well stop” hitting Russian refineries and that Ukraine needed a “new leader.” Zelenskyy answered that he would hold elections if Putin agreed to a 60-day ceasefire. And this is not the first time Trump has announced an energy ceasefire that nobody else heard about. He did the same thing in September, and it never materialized.
So as of Sunday night, the ceasefire exists in exactly one place: a social media post.
