Robert De Niro took the mic at a voting rights rally in New York on Sunday and went straight at Donald Trump. The 83-year-old actor called the president a coward and a “fucking piece of shit,” then turned “keep your fucking hands off our vote” into a full call-and-response chant with the crowd.
He didn’t stop at Trump. De Niro went after House Republicans as “weak and spineless,” accused the Supreme Court of rubber-stamping voter suppression, and slammed the Justice Department and ICE before closing with a four-part rally cry: take back the House, take back the Senate, take back the power, take back the country.
Mark Ruffalo followed him onstage and kept the energy up. He called the midterms “one of the most consequential elections of our lifetimes,” warned that Trump “means everything he says,” and promised he was going to “Hulk out” to fight voter suppression.
The event was Indivisible’s Hands Off Our Vote rally at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, livestreamed Sunday night with a month to go before the November 3 midterms. The lineup also had comedian Mo Amer, Black Voters Matter’s LaTosha Brown, and Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin, and organizers used the night to push an October 17 day of action.
The clip caught fire online. Conservative commentator Link Lauren fired back at De Niro, calling it another rant and saying Trump broke him.
