Chris Brown Avoided Prison in London and Got an Eight Month Suspended Sentence for Hitting a Producer With a Tequila Bottle

Chris Brown walked out of a London courtroom on Monday with no prison time. A judge at Southwark Crown Court gave the 37 year old singer an eight month sentence, suspended for 12 months, for the 2023 nightclub attack where he hit music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle.

Brown pleaded guilty to affray in July over the February 2023 blowup at Tape, a private club in Mayfair. Court footage showed him striking Diaw twice in the head with the bottle, chasing him across the club and throwing punches before he had to be pulled away. The whole thing lasted about 20 seconds, and Diaw needed hospital treatment for head and knee injuries.

“The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous. It carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained.”

Judge Tony Baumgartner

The judge told Brown his fame bought him no special treatment, but his guilty plea and his clean record in recent years kept him out of a cell. He faced up to three years. His vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, who grabbed Diaw in a bear hug during the attack, got four months, also suspended for 12 months.

Brown was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after flying back into the UK for the first time since the attack, and he was released only after putting up a 5 million pound security fee, about $6.7 million, which let his Breezy Bowl XX tour go ahead. Four dates on his joint R and B Tour with Usher were cancelled ahead of Monday’s hearing. Fans lined up outside court before it opened, and Brown thanked the judge before leaving the dock. If he commits another offense in the next year, the eight months can be switched on.
