Jay-Z next to Snoop Dogg performing on stage

Jay-Z Closed His LA Run by Bringing Out Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Too Short, Then Told the Crowd to Question Everything

Night one at SoFi was the family show, with Blue Ivy on piano. Night two belonged to the West Coast. Jay-Z closed his JAŸ-Z30 run in Los Angeles on Saturday night by bringing out Too Short, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, three of the architects of California rap, at a Brooklyn legend’s anniversary show.

He started early. The show opened around 9:25 p.m. with “The Watcher 2,” and Jay folded Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle” right into it, bringing the Oakland rapper out to perform it with him. The Dre and Snoop run came later and hit like a medley of the coast’s greatest hits: “Murder Was the Case,” “The Next Episode,” “California Love,” “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” and “Still D.R.E.”

Los Angeles stayed in the show between the guests, too. Just like night one, Jay worked a tribute to Nipsey Hussle into the set, folding pieces of “Hussle & Motivate” and “Last Time That I Checc’d” into his own records and calling him “Nip the great.”

Before he left, Jay answered the talk that had been building around the shows, the posts claiming SoFi was not really sold out and the tickets were given away. His message to the crowd was simple: trust what you saw with your own eyes.

“People will tell you that nobody was in here tonight, but you got eyes. You can see. People will tell you that the music wasn’t great, but you got ears. You gotta question everything, especially in this day and age. They’ll tell you that Jigga ain’t Jigga. Hov is Hov. Peace and love, Los Angeles.”

Jay-Z, closing the SoFi finale

The SoFi finale ends the JAŸ-Z30 run, his year of anniversary shows marking 30 years since “Reasonable Doubt” and 25 since “The Blueprint.” Night one gave Los Angeles the family moment. Night two gave it the history lesson.
