Dez Bryant Slapped a Phone Out of a Driver’s Hand in a Texas Parking Lot, Got Held at Gunpoint by Police, and Was Cited for Assault

Dez Bryant’s Sunday in Southlake, Texas ended with the former Cowboys star face down in a restaurant parking lot in handcuffs, and it started, of all things, with a traffic argument.

That video is the parking lot confrontation itself, filmed Sunday afternoon outside a restaurant in Southlake. Bryant says two drivers cut him off and drove recklessly, and that one of them threatened to shoot him. When the man pulled out a phone to record instead, Bryant knocked the phone out of his hand. He calls the whole thing self defense.

“There’s only one real victim here… and that’s me.”

Dez Bryant, in his written statement on the incident

Bryant says an officer pointed a rifle at him while he was on the ground, in front of his daughters, and that part is what has stayed with him. He wants a full investigation, and he says the parking lot cameras will show who actually looks like the idiot here.

The two 19-year-old drivers tell it the other way. They say they were heading to eat after church, deny cutting Bryant off or threatening him, and say he confronted them in the lot. One says his hand was hurt when the phone got knocked away, and he plans to sue.

That second video is the police detention, filmed by Bryant’s girlfriend. Southlake police say several callers reported a possible weapon, so officers arrived with firearms drawn, detained everyone while they sorted it out, and found no guns at the scene. Bryant was cited for assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanor, and released at the scene.

A citation is an allegation, not a conviction, and Bryant has a court date in Southlake on or before November 20 to answer it. For now there are two videos, two stories, and one very public parking lot.
