Cain Velasquez has told the story before in pieces. On the Shawn Ryan Show this week, the former UFC heavyweight champion walked through the whole day that ended his career, and he did not dress any of it up.
Velasquez said his son told him one night about abuse at the home daycare the boy attended. The family did what he called the right thing: they filed a report and called the authorities. Harry Goularte, the man accused in the case, was arrested and then released the same week with no ankle monitor. Goularte has pleaded not guilty and denies the allegations, and his criminal case is still unresolved.
“I f—ing lost the will to live. Didn’t care about dying. Didn’t care about anything. I was in a different place at that moment.”
On February 28, 2022, Velasquez followed the car carrying Goularte and his family for about 11 miles, rammed it with his truck and fired multiple rounds. One shot hit Goularte’s stepfather in the arm. Velasquez pleaded no contest to attempted murder and related charges in August 2024, was sentenced to five years in March 2025, and spent nine months of that stretch in solitary confinement, which he told Ryan he came to see as a blessing.

He was released in February 2026 and is on parole now, rebuilding his life with his family while the case against Goularte moves slowly through court. Four years later, his account of that day is the rawest one he has given, and it is not a man asking anybody to excuse what he did.
