Anderson .Paak and Cordae Went Bar for Bar Over Mobb Deep’s ‘Quiet Storm’ a Week After Dropping Their Joint Album

Anderson .Paak and Cordae pulled up to Power 106 in Los Angeles and traded verses over Mobb Deep’s “Quiet Storm” for Justin Credible’s Freestyle Series, the LA Leakers chair that has a way of separating real rappers from everybody else. The full session runs a little over five minutes, and neither one of them coasted.

The timing is not an accident. The two dropped their joint album, Heavy Is the Crown, on October 23, an 11-track project with production from J. Cole, 9th Wonder, Conductor Williams and Swizz Beatz. A freestyle over one of the most respected beats in rap history is a statement about where they think the album belongs.

The chemistry is not new, either. .Paak and Cordae have been making records together since “RNP” in 2019, and it shows here. Two completely different styles, one legendary instrumental, and not a single mailed-in bar between them.
