Chris Rock has something he cannot shake. In a new interview, he talked about Roger Logan, his best friend’s brother, who spent 17 years in a New York prison for a murder he did not commit. Rock said it still hurts him that he never paid for Logan a lawyer.
Logan was convicted in 1999 for the 1997 shooting death of Sherwin Gibbons in Brooklyn and sentenced to 25 years to life. In 2014, the Kings County district attorney’s Conviction Review Unit found that prosecutors had withheld evidence and put false testimony on the stand. The conviction was vacated and Logan walked out after 17 years. He was later awarded a total of $6.725 million from the state and the city.
Rock also dropped the line that has the clip moving: “When you’re Black, White people believe every accusation is a conviction.”
The interview comes as Rock promotes his new movie Misty Green, which hits theaters on October 9.
