Nine people are dead, including two children, after a gunman opened fire at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday evening. The shooter killed himself after barricading inside during a standoff with SWAT.
Police were called to the 700 block of Perry Street around 5 p.m. Friday. Two women were found dead outside the home, and officers found more victims inside after the suspect refused to come out.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah called it one of the most difficult scenes his officers have ever encountered. He said the circumstances are deeply disturbing and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
No motive has been established and the victims’ names have not been released. The coroner’s office spent Saturday morning confirming identities, and a 4 p.m. press conference at Erie City Hall is expected to release the victims’ ages and sexes.
Gov. Josh Shapiro said he spoke with Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and offered the state’s full support.
