Mitchell Fairbarn claims he drank 30 to 40 beers before snatching a flamingo named Peachy out of the habitat at the Flamingo Las Vegas and taking him up to his hotel room.
Apparently he wasn’t planning on doing anything freaky with Peachy. He says it was a joke, something him and his friends could laugh about for the rest of their lives. He even filmed himself doing it, laughing:
“I’m taking it home.”
It happened back in March, around 5 in the morning. Cameras caught him shirtless in the elevator with Peachy tucked under his arm, then hauling him down the hall to room 14171.
Police followed the trail of feathers straight to the room. One officer shouted “I got feathers” while they cleared it, and the hotel’s facilities manager carried Peachy out, in his own words, “like a sack of potatoes.”
Peachy lost seven or eight flight feathers and cut his wing, but he healed up and he’s back home. Fairbarn did not get off that easy. On the stand he owned the beer count, “I believe it’s a realistic estimate,” and he admitted his first story, that he grabbed Peachy to help him, was a lie.
The jury found him guilty of felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty. He gets sentenced December 1 and could face up to four years in prison. He’s been stuck on house arrest in Las Vegas the whole time, passport gone, no way home to Canada.
Peachy made it home months ago. Fairbarn is still trying.
