A license plate reader on a Texas highway just put J.R. Smith behind bars. The two-time NBA champion was pulled over Monday on Interstate 30 outside Dallas after the reader flagged his car for an active warrant, and officers booked him into the Hunt County Detention Center.
The warrant, issued by the Southlake Police Department, is for assault causing bodily injury, family violence. Smith’s brother was in the car with him. Police released the car to his brother and took Smith into custody.
As of midday Tuesday, no bond had been set and Smith, 41, was still in the Hunt County jail, according to jail records cited by Reuters. Southlake police called it an ongoing investigation and said he will be arraigned in Tarrant County.
It is a hard fall for a guy who spent years rebuilding his name. Smith played 16 NBA seasons, won a ring with the 2016 Cavaliers and another with the 2020 Lakers, took Sixth Man of the Year with the Knicks in 2013, then went back to school and played college golf at North Carolina A&T, where he graduated in May.
