A Man’s Gun Jammed When He Tried to Shoot Up a Federal Courthouse in Nashville

A man walked into a federal courthouse in downtown Nashville this morning, pulled a gun at the security checkpoint and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed. He pulled a knife instead, and a security officer shot him dead.

It happened just before 9:30 a.m. at the Fred D. Thompson federal courthouse, the building where all of Nashville’s federal cases are heard. Metro Nashville police say the man was about 40 and from out of state. After the gun failed, he went for the knife, and a security employee with the U.S. Marshals Service opened fire. He died at the hospital.

Police found a white SUV he had parked on the sidewalk outside and brought in the dogs. Nothing threatening in it. They evacuated the downtown library across the street just in case. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling it from here.

The First Assistant U.S. Attorney said this has never happened at this courthouse before. It opened in 2022. Nobody else was hurt.
