The Feds Say New York Ignored 16,000 ICE Detainers Tied to 52,000 Criminal Charges

The fight between Washington and New York just got new numbers. The Department of Homeland Security says New York refused 16,070 ICE detainer requests since President Trump took office, and those requests were tied to 52,503 criminal charges or convictions.

An ICE detainer is a request asking local cops to hold someone up to 48 hours so the feds can come pick them up. DHS says New York said no 16,070 times. The charge breakdown DHS released is heavy: 131 homicides, 132 kidnappings, 1,017 sexual offenses, 1,561 DUIs, 1,631 burglaries, 1,776 robberies, 2,198 weapons infractions, 9,502 assaults and 4,324 drug counts.

“While sanctuary politicians continue to release dangerous criminals onto their streets, our brave law enforcement officers will continue to risk their lives to arrest these heinous criminals and make America safe again.”

Mullin named names. He said the administration is enforcing the law with no help from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul, and accused sanctuary politicians of letting criminals stay in communities instead of turning them over.

Hochul’s office fired back. Spokeswoman Alexia Nizhny said New York “is not and never will be a sanctuary for violent criminals,” and said state law requires notifying federal immigration enforcement about any non-citizen serving a state prison sentence. Her office says about 2,000 people in state facilities have been turned over to the feds under Trump.

“Any assertion otherwise is a blatant mischaracterization of the facts meant to distract from the cruelty and violence we saw from Secretary Mullin’s ICE agents earlier this week.”

The clash exploded last week when ICE agents shot Oscar Belgal in the Bronx. Belgal, 28, took a bullet to the neck and is now in federal custody. His 5-year-old was in the back of the car during the shooting.
