Netflix just dropped the trailer for its new Sean Combs doc Sean Combs: The Reckoning, and the whole thing already has Diddy’s camp heated.
His spokesperson says the legal team is deeply concerned the teaser uses unauthorized footage that was never cleared or approved for release.
In their statement, they call the project a “shameful hit piece” and say Netflix relied on “stolen footage” pulled from years of filming Diddy for his own unfinished documentary project.
They claim the trailer includes private moments, pre-indictment material and even conversations about legal strategy that were never meant for public viewing.
According to Diddy’s side, none of that footage came from him or his team, and they say its use raises serious questions about how it was accessed in the first place.
The statement argues that Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know Diddy has been stockpiling that material since he was 19 to tell his story on his own terms, and calls it fundamentally unfair and illegal to flip it into this series without his say-so.
His team is also pointing out that creative control went to 50 Cent, a longtime rival, and they’re framing the doc as part of a personal vendetta instead of a neutral documentary.
On the other side, 50 and director Alexandria Stapleton are out doing press saying the footage was obtained legally and that the series is about accountability and storytelling, not just tearing him down.
For now, Diddy’s camp says they’ve been in touch with Netflix and are weighing their options as this hits right before the full four-part series drops.
The trailer didn’t just spark conversation, it lit a match on a new fight over who controls Diddy’s story and what footage the world is even supposed to see.
