J. Cole is officially in the sneaker business for himself. The rapper’s first independent silhouette, the Dreamer Indie 5000, dropped today in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina — timed to his sold-out homecoming show at the Crown Coliseum closing out the U.S. leg of The Fall-Off tour.
Cole announced the release in an Instagram post on September 22, calling the shoe five years in the making. The launch follows his split from Puma, where he released the RS-Dreamer in 2020 and the Dreamer 2 in 2021 before the partnership wrapped.
Going independent, Cole took the whole operation in-house. The Indie 5000 is made in Italy with a retro basketball-inspired design — synthetic overlays zig-zag across the upper and carry straight through the sole unit. Dreamer branding is stamped on the tongue and heel.
Cole first teased the shoe back in Vol. 2 of his Might Delete Later vlog, hooping in the prototype on an indoor court while previewing new music. He’s been wearing them publicly ever since — including during his Chinese Basketball League run with the Nanjing Monkey Kings earlier this year.
Pricing and wider availability are still TBA. For now, Fayetteville gets first dibs on day one — fitting for a shoe five years in the making, launched where it all started.
